I watched a TV show last week with my Mom. I watch a lot of television shows with my Mom. She is 88 years old and reading magazines and watching television is a big part of her day. But what made this TV show different was the anxiety it caused me.
The show was about people who have too much. Way too much. They have so much stuff that they have to buy things they already have because they can't find what they are looking for because of all the stuff. And they just keep acquiring more until it is difficult to walk through the hallways and rooms of their homes.
And my anxiety came from how easily I could relate to how they lived their lives.
It is just too easy for us to have more than we need. More clothes than we can remember we have, more shoes, more beautiful serving bowls, more dishes, more books, more little bitty things that have really no purpose. Not to mention all the things that hold tremendous sentimental value that we stash in boxes and drawers. Right now, how many old birthday, anniversary and Christmas cards do you have lining the bottom of a drawer or a box somewhere? Be honest!
I've always loved helping people sort and organize. Probably because I understand the emotional strings that our thoughts about our possessions tie around us. I know how hard it is to throw that birthday card away that a dear friend sent. Or the old coffeemaker because I might need it if we have lots of company over and I need to make decaf. I know, oh yes, I know.
So, I decided to start this blogspot for all of us who have too much stuff and need some help, advice and support to begin cutting those strings. We are all smart, clever, ingenious HandyGals (and Guys) and together we can triumph over inanimate objects and our own hangups about them!
Every week at HandyGals, I will search for and post good ideas, links to articles, book reviews and, most important of all, success stories from all of you who are winning the battle against stuff.
So, help me spread the word. Become a HandyGal with me! Post your problem areas, ask for advice, share what works for you, tell us how you are winning the battle against Stuff! We are HandyGals! There is nothing we can't sort, label, organize and let go off to a new home!
